Kill the Drill

This weekend Upper Green Side officially joined the ranks of the Kill the Drill Coalition along with current members Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, State Senators Tom K. Duane, Liz Krueger , Assemblymembers Jonathan L. Bing, Micah Z. Kellner, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Councilmembers Daniel R. Garodnick, Jessica S. Lappin, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), NYH2O, Just Food, New York Restoration Project (NYRP), Riverkeeper, CIVITAS, Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) and several Manhattan Community Boards just to name a few.
The Kill the Drill Coalition is a campaign to extend the comment period for the State Generic Environmental Impact Statement and to voice opposition to any hydraulic fracturing in the city’s upstate watershed, which supplies 90 percent of New York City’s drinking water. The New York Times just wrote this week that “hydraulic fracturing has been implicated in a growing number of water pollution cases across the country.”
Tomorrow, Tuesday 11/10, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding a public hearing to discuss the proposal to permit hydraulic fracture drilling (known as “fracking”) for natural gas in the heart of our water supply. Before the hearing officially starts, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is organizing a rally to tell the decision makers that our drinking water must NOT be put at risk. Be there and let your voice be heard!
