This weekend we held two great events to bring attention to the issue of better recycling in our neighborhood:
On Saturday we held our first Shred-A-Thon event at the 82nd Street Greenmarket. We collected over 3,500 pounds of paper that will be recycled into new paper products. Many people brought large amounts of financial paperwork that they had been saving for years to finally get the shredding it deserved!
Yesterday we collected over 4.5 tons (that’s right, tons!) of electronic waste at the 92nd Street Greenmarket. We helped prevent dangerous toxic chemicals from entering landfills and watersheds while at the same time recycling valuable metals and plastics that can be used in various new products.
During both events, Upper Green Side collected signatures from the many resident recyclers asking our elected officials to help us bring more of these necessary (and fun!) events to the neighborhood in the near future. Our hope is to have quarterly electronic recycling and paper shredding events that people can rely on and plan for so that the most amount of waste is recycled.
Altogether, it was a great, uplifting weekend of direct action on our neighborhood’s recycling!
